Quest for the Holy Rails

Greetings Traveler

Hello fellow web knight! My name is Jake and I’m a student at Oregon Institute of Technology currently suffering through finishing up my last term. I’ve made it my goal to learn the rapidly growing web framework Ruby on Rails by the end of this term.

I’ve decided the best way to learn it quickly is to pick a project, implement it, and deploy it. I am implementing a multiplayer web implementation of the game Pente, and through this blog I invite all of you to come along for the ride.

I will be posting articles about the things I learn along the way to increase my understanding, share what I learn with others, and hopefully spark a little discussion. As the project matures articles will range from getting started with rails to design decisions to implementation topics and finally to deployment as the project begins to wrap up. The articles of this blog will read like a story. I’ll start from the beginning and you’ll be able to follow the project all the way to completion.

I will begin by posting a series of articles on techniques I decided to use in the Pente project to introduce them to the reader and explain why I am using them.

  • New to Rails and want to get started? Try here.
  • Want to hear about some of the design decisions I made during my research before starting my project? Look no further.
  • Want to follow along with my Pente project? Look at these.
